Finding Inspiration in Unexpected Places

Finding Inspiration in Unexpected Places

When you decide to start a business in your fifties without any prior experience, you know you're in for quite a journey. That's exactly what I faced when launching Kate Ruby and Rose. While my hopes might have been unrealistically high at first, I've embraced every moment of learning and growth along the way.

This past weekend, during a trip to Melbourne for the Australian Open Tennis, I stumbled upon a story that deeply resonated with my own entrepreneurial journey. With just a few hours to explore the city's famous laneways, my partner and I discovered an extraordinary small business called Beekeeper Parade.

The story behind this business touched my heart. It began with a brother and sister, Koky and Sophia, who started a charity while Sophia was battling cancer. Their mission was to improve the lives and education of children in Cambodia. When Sophia passed away in 2012, she left Koky her car with a special request: sell it and use the money to create a business that would support their charity while helping both children and the environment. Koky honored her wish beautifully.

Today, the Sophia Saly School in Cambodia, named in memory of his sister, stands as a testament to their shared vision. Through Beekeeper Parade, Koky and his team have funded English education for over 3,000 children. But Koky's mission extends even further – he's committed to creating products that make a real difference in our world, ensuring they harm neither animals, people, nor the planet.

Visiting one of his two Melbourne stores, I was impressed by the tangible evidence of this commitment. His vibrant collection of backpacks, pencil cases, cosmetic bags and more are all made from recycled textiles – a crucial initiative when you consider that 13.1 million tonnes of textiles are wasted annually. By choosing where and how we shop, we can all help reduce this staggering figure.

What struck me most about the store, beyond its admirable mission, was Koky himself. His bright, friendly personality and contagious smile left me feeling inspired about my own business journey. I've included some photos below of the Beekeeper Parade store and its wonderful products.

This experience has strengthened my belief in supporting small businesses. When we choose to shop at places like Beekeeper Parade, we're not just making a purchase – we're supporting dreams, missions, and positive change in the world. Every small business has a story, and every purchase makes a difference.

Let's continue to support each other's entrepreneurial journeys. After all, that's how we create a community where everyone feels valued and special.
